Make A Gift

For over 50 years, we've believed Medora is a special place. It's our mission to preserve this place for generations, and we think you'd love to be a part of that, too.

It's easy to get involved, and the cause is one Theodore Roosevelt himself couldn't be more passionate about.

There are many different methods to support the upkeep and restoration of Medora. One method is to become an annual member and take advantage of one of our packages. You can also visit our Planned Giving Website. Another method is to choose one of our specific projects listed on the left-hand navigation, beginning with the Rough Riders Hotel Project, or listed below.

VOLUNTEER -- Help TRMF with the gift of your time

Volunteers have been absolutely crucial in sustaining and promoting the growth of TRMF for our children, and our children's children to enjoy and be inspired by -- just like Theodore Roosevelt was right here in the Badlans.

TRMF volunteers keep Harold Schafer's dream of a place for families to connect with one another alive and they make an immesurable impact on the lives of the visitors, employees, and residents they connect with.

TRMF Volunteers are vital to "connecting people to Medora for postive, life-changing experiences."

About the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation

We are pleased that you have interest in learning about the many benefits of gift plans. Preserving historic Medora is at the core of what the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation does, and we could not do it without the generosity of our many gracious donors.

Our History

The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation (TRMF) is a non-profit foundation created in 1986 by Harold Schafer when he sold his Gold Seal Company and gifted the company's assets in Medora to the new foundation. It holds qualified endowments which are eligible receive gifts from North Dakota residents that qualify for the ND 40% State Credit.

Since its founding, TRMF has generated more than $36 million in gifts -- in large and small denominations by many generous friends of Medora.

Those dollars have gone toward expansion and improvement of the Historic Medora experience. You can read more about TRMF here.

Recent Donor-Funded Projects

If you visit Medora today you will see the product of one of our largest projects ever undertaken:

  • The restoration and expansion of the historic Rough Riders Hotel -- a place often frequented by Theodore Roosevelt during his time here (it was called the "Metropolitan" then). This was the first project undertaken by Harold in 1962 when he began the resurrection of Medora.
  • You'll also see the work donors have been able to help accomplish like the brand new, Bill & Jane Marcil Life Skills Center, which for the first time, offers our staff, cast, and volunteers a place to work, train, and grow together.
  • You'll also see a historically accurate renovation of the Joe Ferris General Store, the conversion of the Von Hoffman House to a period-appropriate museum and gallery for traveling artists.
  • You'll even see the work of TRMF donors in the infrastructure at the Medora Musical -- like the safer, wider road leading to the amphitheatre.

All of our projects past, present and future, and indeed, all of TRMF’s Medora operations, depend on charitable giving by our many supporters.

Thank you for considering the Medora Foundation in your charitable giving plans.
